US multinational Invenergy to deliver at scale in Scotland
Last updated: April 2025
Invenergy, an American-headquartered global energy company, believes in Scotland’s energy transition sector. Its UK vision draws on its international track record: over 200 projects across four continents, and 33 gigawatts (GW) in electricity production.
A giant leap in energy transition
Imagine an energy industry so advanced it can power a nation almost entirely with renewable electricity. How about one that could be worth £90 billion in investments in green industries? Or one with 962 projects planned, with a mighty capacity of 57.3GW of electricity?
These figures are from the Scottish Government and Skills Development Scotland (SDS). They demonstrate that Scotland is making one giant leap in energy transition.
And it’s going places. Fast.
Keen to capture this energy revolution is privately-held American multinational Invenergy. Headquartered in Chicago, with more than $65 billion (£50.2 billion) in transactions completed, the company entered Scotland’s renewable industry in 2013.

Delivering renewable projects at scale in Scotland
Abundant wind resources make Scotland an ideal location for the US multinational to invest in.
Transatlantic backing in Scottish renewables
Since 2013, Invenergy has contributed to the nation's own net zero targets for 2045 by delivering a portfolio of wind energy projects.
The company develops, owns and operates clean energy projects around the world, helping to maximise Scotland’s worldclass infrastructure and talent in energy transition. This business model thrives as Invenergy continues to work with a broad portfolio of partners in Scotland – from landowners to engineers – so the US energy heavyweight can continue to grow its international operation.
With its joint venture partners, Invenergy has developed three onshore wind projects in Scotland. These include the Bettyhill and Corriegarth projects in the Highland Council area, and more recently the Pencloe Wind Farm in East Ayrshire under construction. Pencloe will be the first 100% Invenergy-owned onshore wind project in Scotland.
Stuart Winter, Invenergy’s Vice President and UK Country Manager, says: “In Scotland we can deliver projects at scale. Given Scotland’s abundant wind resource and infrastructure, it was the logical place to locate our UK business. Scotland has a huge talent pool and is at the forefront of renewable energy transition.”
Invenergy’s investment from across the Atlantic is a firm endorsement of Scotland’s status as a leading nation in renewables. The company’s confidence in Scotland and the wider UK energy policies is reflected by its expanding Edinburgh-based team. It is developing innovative energy solutions, with its Scottish windfarms an integral part of the company's business strategy.
Expanding with European wind energy
Stuart adds: “It was natural progression for the company to invest in, develop and retain the Pencloe Wind Farm. We have real faith in our employees and our business. The UK’s regulatory landscape is adapting to better support the industry to develop at pace. All these factors are vital for Invenergy to invest and expand in Scotland.”
As a Scot himself, and having worked for American companies for many years, Stuart knew that being in the heart of renewable energy in Europe was fundamental to Invenergy’s international growth strategy.
Scotland is key to this strategy, as he says: “Our expansive scope for delivering projects will be crucial to help Scotland achieve its net zero ambitions by servicing, operating and maintaining our renewable energy assets here. We’ll grow and diversify our multi-service approach to clean energy to match the wider UK’s energy transition strategy.”

Support from the US to Scotland
Invenergy’s journey into Scotland has been supported by Scottish Enterprise’s international arm, Scottish Development International (SDI), for several years. Assistance has come from our Inward Investment Specialists from our Chicago office, in Brandon Beech and Chris Trengove, with Andy Vaughan providing expert help and guidance from Scotland.
In November 2024, Scottish Enterprise Chief Executive, Adrian Gillespie, met Invenergy and the company’s Chief Commercial Officer, Jim Shield, to reaffirm SDI’s support for the company. For ambitious overseas investors into Scotland, SDI is here to help companies grow their future energy projects. This includes wide-ranging support such as research and development (R&D) and Capex grants.
Thinking big from Scotland
Stuart adds: “SDI provided a vital link between our countries so we can grow our portfolio of clean energy projects in Scotland. From a technical perspective, it has helped us with reports and research – and also in exploring markets and financing options for emerging technologies.”
So what is Invenergy’s longer-term business strategy for the UK?
With 2GW of renewables capacity already in their pipeline, Invenergy will look to grow its services, development team, and renewable energy portfolio in the UK. “Thinking big” here will also help Scotland cement its position as an international leader in energy transition.
Stuart sums up: “The UK, including Scotland, is vital to our global operation. Having an even wider presence in Europe from the US means our business is in a strong position for growth. This presents Invenergy with exciting new opportunities to support the UK in achieving its renewable energy goals.”
